A Tribute ....

He was cunning-some say wicked, arrogant, and egoistic. He could go to any extent to fulfill his objective. Even accused of murders. Morality was not a word in his dictionary. A traitor by conventional means. In his times he was more hated than he has ever been loved thereafter. At times his own men suspected him because he was overtly secretive.Conversely – He was one of the most learned men of all times. A strict disciplinarian and an astute politician.  He commanded unparalleled respect from people across ideology, sects, religions and nationality. One is often awed by the qualities a single person would ever possess and hence he often remains as much a myth as history.

Yet one quality that always separates him out is – His vision. A vision hitherto never thought of. Nay ! – Something that was so well ahead of the times that it took another nineteen hundred years for another one like him to walk the rope.

Arya Chanakya aka Kautilya aka Vishnugupta was the architect of India in true sense. Of course, many may disagree with this –given the fact that we are still stuck in the date of birth controversy about India ! ( there is a controversy about usage of this name as well !.  but that’s for later). For some it starts with the tale of ‘Bharat’ –which again is argued to have ‘happened’ ranging from 10,000 years to 50,000 years ago!. Some ‘scholars ‘attribute it to the Mughal times while others give a sacrosanct date-year of 1492 AD!. Then there are the neo evangelists – who depending on their ideological (and of course political) positions, attribute it to years 1818, 1947 etc etc !.

For me, Chanakya remains the greatest teacher for students of polity till date   and one of the greatest visionaries of all times ! Unfortunately, he is revered, but not worshipped in this country - and understandably so  because we as a society have always believed in the righteousness of the means as much as the sanctity of the goal. And Chanakya fails this test!. However, I firmly believe that we owe our identiy to this man as much –or should I say MORE -as we owe to the legends of all times.

Anyways, much can be written about Chanakya and tons of material already available everywhere. That is not the subject of this article. History always repeats itself ( ah well good Mr Gosavi for letting us know this !! ) and the socio-political situation was no different around 500 yrs ago ( or you can take any number for that matter, barring a few instances and places in the history o India) ,as it was during the times of Chanakya.

Even today, we have the Dhananands who are ruling the Empire of ‘India’ in an aristocratic sense. , the Paurus and the Ambhis who donot tend to look beyond their kingdoms and the Kalingas who have ‘bought’ peace with the mighty!. Then there are the ‘rebels’ who have the courage but not the statesmanship, the good hearted who have the urge but not the conviction and many others who have a bit of all but no means to help better the situation. There is increasing anarchy with the common people loosing their confidence with the ruling class. A sense of terrible helplessness reflecting everywhere – A perfect recipe for a rebellion (“Not in a classical sense” I should say   – else I may be convicted of treason! ).  To top it, We also have the Alexanders of modern times knocking our doors in a political and economic sense!  .

What we desperately need today is a ‘Chanakya’- to dream, believe in his dream, make us believe in his vision and march us in that direction! ‘Acharya’ – We need you !!. And we need you as never before!!. We might have a Chanakya somewhere around us. Or we may have him sometime in the future. However, we may not even know – For – Great people are remembered and honored after their death – And the greatest ones ?– Centuries later !!!

The Ghosts of Future

Watching TV has become a rarity for me now a days. My kid has established his sole dominion over that space and we need to live on his mercy to get our pie. I now understand why it was called an “Idiot Box” since my childhood days. Nevertheless, when I am lucky enough to get the “slot”, News channels is the first thing that I jump upon. Of course, there are other means to stay ‘connected’ with the world and know latest events .But nothing comes close to Indian News Channels when it comes to Infotainment!( and I don’t know what that means) . They definitely are a class apart!.

Coming to the point – There was nothing exciting expected yesterday ,with the polls over , the mud slinging behind and politicians and pundits busy with ‘analysis’. But as a habit, I switched to one of the news channels and there was flash news about a politician from Amethi, venting his anger on the “High Command” of the Congress!. My first and instant reaction was to admire his courage since this act would mean end of his political career!.Surely, Congress and in particular Rahul Gandhi got a drubbing in Amethi (and I am not even talking of the entire UP because that was expected). But, then, discontent in the Gandhi bastion is quite unheard of  even during the worst phases of their political career.

Now – I was not as such following the UP polls, candidate by candidate and had no idea to the credentials of this gentleman oops sorry the sitting MP of Congress- Sanjay Singh. But during, the course of the news conversation (which also saw participation of his wife), I realized that his wife was defeated in the polls from Amethi . I moved on for some other exciting news but then something flashed my mind ! Sanjay Singh-Amita Singh …Modi…Badminton..things I thought I had read long ago and in all likelihood forgotten. My restless mind immediately took me to Google and I recollected the horrifying tale as it happened  24 years back !,

The motive of this blog is not to narrate that story-For that is available on net.Syed Modi Murder I am here because my belief  has been shattered. Well some might actually call me an idiot for having it in the first place !.

Scions of rich and famous always live a challenging life. While on one side, they have easy acess to name, fame, money and what not , the other side is full of expectations, comparisions, and obviously the dark fear of failure . However, one power which they possess and seldom realize is the ability to change the world. Rahul Gandhi is no exception.  Since the time, he has frayed into politics, a lot has been written, televised, spoken ( and what not) about him.. There was never a chance lost to question his leadership skills, political maturity, his five star simplicity and of course his maturity at large. Not to mention the ghosts of corruption that haunt the family since Bofors days.

I am not a big fan of Rahul Gandhi and neither against him in general. While I saw merit in some of the battering that he received, I had belief in his integrity, a ray of hope that he would be different and MIGHT just change the world, that we stood a likely chance in believing him ,more than anybody else.  All that is shattered now…….

Here’s what I wish to say to Rahul Gandhi –
I was SHOCKED to know that Ameeta Singh was congress party’s candidate from Amethi. Well agreed, Sanjay Singh and Ameeta have not been convicted by the court ( the case went for 21 years). But then so are Dawood Ibrahim, Abu Karim Telgi, a million criminals and thousands of politicians in India !. The issue is not about judicial status  Rahul- For everybody knows the flaws of the system .Its about conscience. And I am not talking of the past either when you MAY have had little or no control. But 2012 elections –You were the all in all of UP. You had the power ,the ability to bring about the change.

To be honest,  I would still have reposed  my trust in you as a person ,as a politician ,even if you had won zero seats in the elections - had I not chanced on this news clip.
I would not even have taken notice of this incident, had it been a SP ,BSP or other candidate for they may  their political compulsions. What compulsions did you have Rahul ?Tell us please .Did you not have the courage to clean your own backyard ? Or are you naïve ?
Why should I now believe you Rahul  - Why ?.

These ghosts will prevail to haunt you in the future.
